3 Tips For a Perfect Engagement Session

One of the first steps we take couples through is the Engagement Session. Engagement Sessions play a big part in the 88 Love Stories Experience. It’s a perfectly casual way for us to photograph you before the wedding day. We get to know each other better and gives you the first experience of having your love story photographed.

1. Pick the Right Location
Such an important piece to making this session perfect! We love it when couples pick a location that’s special to them! What places draw you as a couple? It could be the mountains, the beach, a favorite park, or the city. Are there hobbies you like to do as a couple that could be incorporated? You can incorporate painting, cooking, hiking, or staying home to curl up on the couch. We love finding the right locations that help couples get energized about their photos, from the epic mountains to the intimate in-home spots.

2. Wear the Right Outfit
This is an important question that’s frequently asked. We say: Don’t try to match. Instead, pick outfits and accessories that coordinate instead. What’s your personal style? You want to feel comfortable, confident and photo-ready. It’s okay to get glammed up and dressy, or if you’re the casual type you may want to dress down. Most patterns are okay except when they look TOO busy (like floral or small plaid patterns). Stick with something that’s not distracting. 3. Schedule Your Session Two Months in Advance
Always schedule your Engagement Session at least 2 months from the date you wish to book. If you plan to use the photos for save-the-dates, schedule the session at least 6-8 months out from your wedding date. We can also shoot sunrise sessions and require sunrise sessions for busy locations such as a downtown area like Washington D.C.

Bonus: Bring a Prop or a Pet!
Whether its pets, banners, letters or numbers that match your wedding date, props are a great way to bring some extra personality into your Engagement Session. When bringing a pet, also make sure to bring a friend who can be in charge of their care while you’re having other photos taken.

In summary...

1. Pick the Right Location: Let your imagination take you away to epic locations or to an intimate in-home session!

2. Wear the Right Outfit: Coordinate, but don't "match".

3. Schedule Your Session Two Months in Advance: Plan ahead to have the most flexibility with schedule and preparation.
